- Jean Seberg .
- Jean Seberg was a pretty blonde who was voted "Most Likely To Succeed" when she graduated from High School in 1956. ... She received enormous publicity prior to the film's release, but both Seberg and director Otto Preminger were raked over the coals by critics and audiences alike. (The Harvard Lampoon cited "Saint Joan" as the worst film of the century 1857-1957 & complained that Seberg was "soporific as a saint & insipid as a sinner". ...
- Seberg chose to make another film with Preminger, "Bonjour Tristesse". If that movie had been her first, the career of Jean Seberg might have been quite different. ... Jean-Luc Godard's "Breathless", written by Francois Truffaut & co-starring Jean-Paul Belmondo, gave Seberg her most fondly remembered role. ... Jean Seberg appeared to be here to stay, but like her sophisticated facade, the public illusion was more persuasive than her private reality. Despite fine performances in dozens of underrated domestic & French movies, Seberg's life and career may well have been doomed from the moment she left her Midwestern home in Marshalltown. ...
- In "From The Journals Of Jean Seberg", Mark Rappaport's fictitious approach to her life, a former babysitting charge who grew up around the corner from Seberg tells the story of a sensitive small town girl driven to professional and personal despair. Mary Beth Hurt, now 47, plays the Jean Seberg who might have been had she overcome the tragedy of her life with Rappaport's blessed sense of irony. The film traces the work of such contemporaries as Jane Fonda and Vanessa Redgrave who achieved greater fame and recognition than Seberg and were better protected emotionally during their days of political activism. ...
- The fragile Seberg tried to kill herself annually on the anniversary of her baby daughter's death, after being hounded by the FBI who leaked false rumours that the premature infant had been fathered by a Black Panther. In "From The Journals of Jean Seberg", now playing at art houses across the country, Rappaport tells an immensely sad story with both effective detail and compassionate honesty. ...

- Her transition from prestige pictures like Bonjour Tristesse to Eurotrash epics like her husband Romain Gary's Birds in Peru and empty-headed blockbusters like Airport did nothing to alter the public perception of Seberg as a beautiful, troubled, "empty vessel" into which various men and male groups poured their often misogynist obsessions.
- Jean Seberg was always more icon than actress. From her disastrous appearance as the title character in Preminger's Saint Joan (1958), to Godard's immortalizing of her face in Breathless, to her status as fashion maven in the 1960s, to her extracurricular work with the Black Panthers, Seberg's acting career seemed secondary to her cultural presence from the beginning. Her transition from prestige pictures like Bonjour Tristesse to Eurotrash epics like her husband Romain Gary's Birds in Peru and empty-headed blockbusters like Airport did nothing to alter the public perception of Seberg as a beautiful, troubled, "empty vessel" into which various men and male groups the sadistic Preminger, Godard, novelist Romain Gary, the Panthers poured their often misogynist obsessions.
- Writer-director Mark Rappaport, familiar from 1992's Rock Hudson's Home Movies, has devised an ingenious strategy for dealing with this complex character in From the Journals of Jean Seberg. He hired Mary Beth Hurt (born 10 years later in the same Iowa town as Seberg) to play the actress as if she didn't commit suicide in 1979 but lives on like all actors through the magic of film, reincarnated as a sort of performance artist, film historian, and cultural commentator. ...
- The format of the film is loosely chronological, starting with Seberg's appearance in Saint Joan after being chosen from 3000 contenders. We learn that director Preminger's legendary cruelty extended far beyond the usual director-actor trials: on the day that a Life magazine photographer was invited to cover Joan being burned at the stake, Preminger allowed Seberg to actually be burned. ...
- Rappaport puts Seberg in context as one of an army of cinematic Joans Ingrid Bergman, Falconetti, Alida Valli through clips that show both Seberg's freshness and youth and the beginnings of the exploitation of her image and her entrapment by it. ...
- Seberg's next film was also for Preminger Bonjour Tristesse. ... In a startlingly clever scene, Rappaport shows an exchange between Seberg and David Niven, then reprises it by superimposing Hepburn's head over Seberg's. ... In the scene of Joan burning at the stake, Rappaport replaces Seberg's head with that of poor wailing Babs.
- Seberg's career was filled with disappointments good roles that flopped at the box office (Lillith) and bad roles that succeeded (Airport). ... Rappaport explores issues of sexism, fetishism, and exploitation in this troika Fonda's marriage to Vadim resulting in fetish fantasies like Barbarella, Redgrave suffering (if not quite so vividly) at the hands of Tony Richardson, and of course Seberg enacting her husband's lurid, sexist fantasies in a string of films. Seberg, speaking through Hurt, wonders why so many writers and directors insist on offering images of their wives as hookers and femme fatales.
- Of course, Fonda, Redgrave, and Seberg had another crucial similarity activist politics. And all suffered for it, says Seberg, though Fonda "was protected by her star image. ... And Seberg? She was framed by the FBI, Hoover in particular, who leaked stories that she was pregnant by one of the Black Panthers, whose cause she fought for. ... A series of nervous breakdowns followed that eventually killed Seberg in 1979 at the age of 40.

- Petite and pert, the elfin Jean Seberg, the unstable, emotionally fragile Jean Seberg is a most beloved icon on both sides of the Atlantic. ... But she had a special quality, and voice and manner of speaking, and was a great actress and always looked cool and classic and great, and she left us the Jean Seberg hair style. ...
- Jean Seberg was born November 13, 1938, in Marshalltown, Iowa. Born, raised and ultimitely stuck in Iowa until one day when Otto Preminger brought his months long, and much-publicized contest (involving some 18,000 hopefuls) to an end -- when he spotted the 17 year old, corn-fed Jean. ...
- But the failure of that film (Saint Joan, 1957 -- interesting tangent: during the final scene, in which Joan is burned on a stake, Seberg actually took a fireball full in the face on camera, resulting in one of the most realistic and disturbing death scenes in cinema history), and the only moderate success of her next film, Bonjour Tristesse (1958), combined to stall Seberg's career, until her role in Jean-Luc Godard's landmark New Wave feature, Breathless (1959), brought her renewed international attention. ...
- But Moreuil did direct Jean in Playtime (1962). ...
- Romain Gary committed suicide the year after Jean. ...

With Sean Connery and Joanne Woodward in A Fine Madness (1966), for Chabrol again in Line of Demarcation (1966) with Stephane Audran, and Chabrol's The Road to Corinth (1968), Pendulum (1968) with George Peppard, Richard Kiley and Charles McGraw, looking as sexy as she ever did in Josh Logan's Paint Your Wagon (1969) with Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood, Burt Lancaster's love interest in the blockbuster Airport (1970), Yves Boisset's L' Attentat (1972) with Jean-Louis Trintignant and Michel Piccoli. After her death came the documentary Jean Seberg: American Actress (1995), and the docudrama From the Journals of Jean Seberg (1995), with Mary Beth Hurt as Jean. ...
- In the late 1960s, actress Jean Seberg became increasing active in left wing political groups. ... But such was Seberg's influence, esspecially in Europe, that FBI director J. Edgar Hoover considered her a genuine liability, and, in 1970 when she was seven months preganant, issued instructions that Seberg be "neutralised". ...
- The reaction so traumatised Seberg that she gave birth prematurely, and the child was stillborn. The next day Seberg called a press conference, where she presented shocked journalists with the body of her dead white child. The measure, though extreme, put an end to the rumours, but the FBI continued to hound Seberg until she eventually moved back to Paris. ...

- The life of Jean Seberg (1938) changed course dramatically when, at the age of 17, she was chosen - from thousands of candidates - to play Joan of Arc in Otto Preminger's Saint Joan. ... With her unforgettable role as an American beatnik in Godard's film début A bout de souffle, Seberg however made film history, after which she played leading roles in several international productions. In the sixties, Seberg was involved with the Black Panther movement. After several marriages with famous husbands and a period in which drink and drugs played a significant role, the FBI portrayed her as a sexual pervert and Seberg had a miscarriage, her life ended in 1979 in an alleged suicide. Rappaport chose for his film about Seberg the daring form of a fictional autobiography (made on video, with widespread use of video techniques). Actress Mary Beth Hurt plays Seberg and looks back on her turbulent life. The director uses Seberg's life to make some hard-hitting comments on the social and cultural context of film history and twentieth-century popular culture. ...

- From the Journals of Jean Seberg.
- Part biography, part social autopsy, and part movie criticism, From the Journals of Jean Seberg is a fascinating perspective of the life and films of the star of Joan of Arc, Bonjour Tristesse, Lillith, and Paint Your Wagon. From director Mark Rappaport, who previously brought the equally-inventive Rock Hudson's Home Movies to the screen, From the Journals of Jean Seberg gives a posthumous (Seberg committed suicide in 1979), speculative interpretation of what the actress might have said about her career. Played by Mary Beth Hurt (who grew up in Marshalltown, Iowa, Seberg's home town), Rappaport's vision of Seberg speaks with a barbed tongue that spares no one -- not Otto Preminger, Jean Luc Godard, Jane Fonda, Vanessa Redgrave, or any of her three husbands. ...
- "Most of my movies were mediocre, but I was in one or two great ones," confides Seberg at the beginning of this odyssey. ... Seberg burst on the movie scene in 1957, when, at the age of 17, she beat out 3000 contenders for the title role in Otto Preminger's epic biopic, Joan of Arc. The movie was, to put it mildly, a disappointment, due in large part to Seberg's horrible miscasting. ... Few people saw the movie, but among those who did was Jean Luc Godard, who instantly wanted Seberg for 1959's Breathless. ...
- Breathless and 1964's Lillith, the chronicle of a woman's slow and sure descent into madness, represented the heights of Seberg's uneven career. ... " Several years later, in 1969, Seberg appeared opposite Clint Eastwood (with whom she had a brief affair) in the failed musical Paint Your Wagon. ...

- Despite generous heapings of gossip and indisputable fact, the most interesting aspect of Jean Seberg may be the film criticism. Rappaport thoroughly dissects at least five of Seberg's films (Joan of Arc, Bonjour Tristesse, Breathless, Lillith, and Birds in Peru), offering commentary of the depth and insight that is typically found in only the most exhaustive critical essays. Rappaport also offers an opinion of what made Seberg unique -- according to him, she was the first actor to stare blankly back at the camera. ...
- Jean Seberg's social viewpoint is indisputably cynical. ...

- Like his earlier Rock Hudson's Home Movies, Mark Rappaport's latest movie takes the form of a posthumous "autobiography," with actress Mary Beth Hurt playing Breathless and Passion Of Joan Of Arc star Jean Seberg, looking back at her life and career through a series of film clips and monologues. ... His presentation of Seberg as a self-loathing, talentless, politically naive waif borders on misogynistic. Furthermore, Seberg, as presented in Hurt's narration, is a strange mixture of doomed actress, cultural critic and far-reaching film historian. While the film largely portrays Seberg as a tragic figure dominated by cruel father figures like Joan Of Arc director Otto Preminger and her second husband, novelist/filmmaker Romain Gary, the film itself seems to take a similar view, treating her with an almost sadistic disdain, and relegating her strong political beliefs (she was arrested for running guns for the Black Panthers) to a cursory mention in the film's last five minutes. Yet despite its myriad flaws, Jean Seberg is still a fascinating film, largely because Seberg led such an interesting life, and partially because some of Rappaport's commentary is intriguing and thought-provoking. Like its protagonist, Jean Seberg is at times brilliant but ultimately something of a disappointment. ...
