- The removal of the patches -- and of a fabric backing initially attached to support the shroud -- was carried out in almost complete secrecy between late June and late July, the Archdiocese of Turin said. ...

- Shroud of Turin to Get State-of-the-Art Storage System.
- TURIN, Italy (CNS) Experts may find much to quibble about when it comes to the Shroud of Turin, but they all seem to agree on one thing: The linen cloth needs a new home.
- After close calls throughout the centuries, with at least two fires, water damage and general exposure to the elements, a stateoftheart storage system should protect the shroud from just about everything under the sun.
- 22 display in Turin's St. John the Baptist Cathedral, the shroud, believed by many to be Christ's burial cloth, will disappear from the public eye into a new, hightech encasement.
- Tucked away inside its new fireresistant, bulletproof case, outfitted with temperature and air pressure controls, the shroud should last long beyond its next exhibition.
- The Italian aerospace company Alenia, known for military aircraft and missile production, lent its experience to the design of the shroud's new case, which together with a support cart, weighs more than 1 ton.
- "According to my scientific consultants," Archbishop Severino Poletto of Turin told Catholic News Service Aug. ...
- "It will keep the shroud laid out flat and not rolled up like before, and it guarantees that exposure to light and environmental influences during public displays don't damage the image," said the archbishop, whose role as leader of the Turin Archdiocese grants him the title of Vaticanappointed custodian of the shroud.
- After the 2000 exhibition, a revamped chapel in the cathedral's transept, complete with temperature and humidity controls, a fireproof drop ceiling and a renovated fire extinguishing system, will host the shroud.
- Until a 1997 fire, the shroud was kept in the church's Guarini Chapel, rolled up in a wooden box and placed beneath several layers of protective glass.
- Although firefighters managed to carry the shroud to safety, flames and smoke severely damaged the chapel, and restoration is expected to last until 2006.
- Archbishop Poletto said that even after repairs are completed, however, the approximately 14footby4foot shroud will never again call the Guarini Chapel home.
- The extensive size of the new case, which prevents further creases by allowing the shroud to lie flat, makes the small Guarini Chapel too close for comfort.
- Although Archbishop Poletto pleaded ignorance on the technological fine points of the shroud's new case, he emphasized the need to guarantee the religious item's survival well into the third millennium.

- «Shroud, a risky restoration» .
- Scientists’ polemics on the cleaning work by Marco TOSATTI VATICAN CITY - There is a controversy on the Shroud: the “restoration” operation, led in August and being illustrated in Turin next Saturday, has provoked very strong reactions in the sindonologists’ world. ... The patches sewn on the sheet by the Clare nuns in 1534 were an important, meaningful and visual part of the Shroud history and patrimony. ... If, as it seems, the next Shroud exhibition is not taking place until 2023, many wonder why the restoration proposal has not been the subject of a wider consultation, considering the religious value of the object. ... They also wonder if the new backing cloth has been analyzed as to the presence of chemical residues or impurities that could affect the Shroud. The fear of some sindonologists is that the patches elimination and the cloth substitution have compromised significantly the possibility of “reading” the Shroud history in its secular development. The world-wide symposium of experts organized by the Archdiocese of Turin in March 2000 recommended: “A series of experiments specifically aimed at improving our knowledge for preservation purposes is essential, particularly considering the remarkable development of the instruments and the improvements in the non-invasive analytical methods. ” This recommendation, the scientists complain, has not been followed, and they wonder why the investigators attending that convention, or the scientists of the STURP (Shroud of Turin Research Project), the scientific group that has probably carried out the widest and scientifically most coordinated research in 1978, have not been consulted with regard to the alterations or, in case, called to “monitoring” the operation and collecting the data at the right time. ... Emanuela Marinelli, has also written to the Pope, the Shroud “owner”, protesting because the operation has provoked "the loss of precious material: dusts, pollens, particles of blood and other micro-traces present also in the up-to-now hidden parts of the Shroud. ” The “Collegamento” proposal is that “the Commission for the preservation of the Holy Shroud may be widened, under the protection of the Papal Academy of Sciences”: that is, under the Pope’s more direct control. ...

12. Current Research on the Shroud of Turin By 1988 Carbon 14 dating
- library.catholic.org
- Current Research on the Shroud of Turin By 1988 Carbon 14 dating techniques were sufficiently sophisticated to be done with minutely small quantities of material. The Vatican agreed to such a test, and three laboratories were selected by the Archdiocese of Turin -- Oxford University, the University of Arizona, and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. At the end of the testing the Vatican reported that the three tests had dated the cloth only to medieval times, and therefore the Shroud was not authentic. These reports were carried around the world, and most scientists lost interest in pursuing the mystery of the Shroud any further -- in spite of the overwhelming body of evidence from other tests that indicated a much older Shroud. The Carbon 14 results also provided skeptics with a piece of hard scientific evidence to continue their attacks on the Shroud's authenticity. Current research focuses on understanding the Carbon 14 data and on the Shroud's Jewish origins. The two leading Shroud researchers today are Dr. John Jackson, director of the Turin Shroud Center in Colorado Springs, and Dr. ... The Sedov laboratory is researching the exchange of carbon isotopes with linen, while the Turin Shroud Center is continuing his prior research into the "yellowing" of linen with respect to temperature. ... According to Kouznetsov, an inaccurate carbon count in flax due to a process called biofractionalization, coupled with the possible chemical bonding of extraneous carbon to the shroud during the fire, may have resulted in an inaccurate Carbon 14 measurement. Kouznetsov has said that the shroud is "not less than 1800 years old" once corrections are made for the fire and the inaccurate carbon-in-flax count.
